Yung Sammy is a Nigerian-Indian rapper who is known for drawing inspiration from his unique cultural background in his music. Specifically, Sammy seamlessly raps in both English and Hindi. His music also highlights his multilingual skills and fluency in languages like Punjabi, Yoruba, and more.

Therefore, this article provides details about the NCR Delhi-based rapper, growing up in India’s capital, his identity, rapping in Hindi and his connection to Nigeria.

Samuel Lloyds, who goes by the stage name Yung Sammy, was born in Nigeria and raised in Delhi, India. He has a degree in international relations from an Indian college.

Yung Sammy Career

Yung Sammy initially wanted a career as a diplomat or ambassador due to his passion for international affairs and travel. However, growing up as a son of a pastor contributed to his journey into music. Sammy was inspired to become a rapper after he listened to his first Hindi rap, Honey Singh’s ‘Brown Rang’, during a road trip to Jaipur with his family.

“The first Hindi rap I heard was Honey Singh’s ‘Brown Rang’. I was like: ‘What’s this? This is different; it’s rhyming in Hindi.’ I already knew Hindi by then, so it was exciting and fun. I started learning more about artistes such as Bohemia and Mafia Mundeer. I need to do something like this. So, I started writing on my own,” he said to The Hindu.

Hence, Sammy began his musical journey by venturing into the experimental, unique and vibrant rap and hip-hop sounds with a series of tracks that showcased his ever-evolving style. He later signed with Desi Trill, co-founded by Shabz Naqvi and Ty-Ty Smith, and released his first track with the label “The Intro”, which was well received by the Indian audience. Sammy went ahead to release other popular tracks such as “4×4”, “Mehndi”, “Shaant”, “Moved On” and “Big Man Ting”. He has also collaborated with popular rappers like BBB, MC Static and Urban Poet.

Sammy’s track, “4×4” featuring Urban Poet, propelled him to the limelight. According to Sammy, the track was inspired by the “Delhi culture and all about how Delhi moved the Gen Z’s and everything.” “4×4” went on to garner over 3 million views on Instagram and almost half a million on Spotify.

Distributed by Universal Music Group in the United States, Sammy’s music is one of perseverance in the face of challenges,

“While there have been challenges, I’ve also received a lot of acceptance and support from the Indian audience,” he acknowledges, adding, “I choose to ignore negative comments about me because you cannot address all. It is the mentality and the place they come from. So, that is not even a challenge. I feel it is not about India; it’s about the individual. I’ve received more love than challenges.”

Sammy’s multicultural background offers a unique advantage, which sets him apart from artists in India, Nigeria and globally. His fluency in Hindi adds to his appeal, especially in the diverse entertainment environment that India operates.

He said: “My multicultural background is a huge asset to my music career. It is my USP. In the entertainment industry, everyone’s looking for something different. There’s so much competition, especially with all the rappers emerging. I don’t want to rely solely on my USP. Sure, it’s been working great for me, but I also want to be known as an artiste whose music speaks for itself. I want people to hear my voice and instantly recognise it, even if they don’t know what I look like. That’s the kind of impact I strive for.”

Although Sammy was raised in India, he still shares a deep connection to his homeland, Nigeria. He was the opening act for Rema, during the “Calm Down” crooner’s India shows in Delhi.

“Rema has been taking African culture and musical touch, along with Burna Boy and so many more, to the world,” Sammy said.

He is also inspired by other Nigerian artists like Burna Boy, Davido, Nasty C and Runtown.

Yung Sammy Family

Sammy was raised in a strict Christian background. His father is a priest who was posted to India to minister in a church. Sammy’s sister was a chorister in the church when they were growing up.

At first, his family did not approve of his choice to become a rapper because they did not understand it. However, they later got around to supporting him after they saw the progress he was making in the industry.

Yung Sammy Age

Information about Yung Sammy’s age is unavailable for now.
